Tales of a Yellow Bike - Screening

Summary:
Tina Hahn's film Tales of a Yellow Bike, will debut Saturday, Oct. 25 during the Planet in Focus International Environmental Film and Video Festival.

The festival, which runs from Oct. 22 to 26, is made up of more than 100 films and videos focused on the environment.

Hahn, director of Tales of a Yellow Bike, decided to focus her film on the importance of bicycles as the main mode of transportation after learning about Toronto's BikeShare program, which ran from 2000 to 2006.

The bicycle lending program, in which hundreds of members could rent yellow bikes at 16 hubs in the city, shut down due to insufficient funding.

"I wanted to do a film about bike sharing programs across the world," Hahn said. "Our first days of shooting happened when BikeShare shut down in November 2006."

Tales of a Yellow Bike tells the story of bike share programs in Europe, North America, Columbia and China and the perception of bicycles in various countries.

"In Amsterdam they have so many bikes they don't know what to do with them all," Hahn said. "In China they have 470 million bicycles. In China, bikes used to be the only mode of transportation. In Bogota, Columbia there are hundreds of kilometers of bike lanes."

So why is Toronto so slow at jumping on the bicycle wagon?

A good project comes to a sad end

It is with regret that I am writing to tell you that, after six years of award-winning programming and service, the Community Bicycle Network's beloved BikeShare program will not be operating during the 2007 season due to a lack of funding.

While we will not be able to deliver the program, the Community Bicycle Network continues to explore opportunities that may allow some form of bike-lending program to continue next year.

We are extremely proud of the BikeShare program and this year's highlights include:

Award Winning Bike Lending Program in Financial Need

BikeShare, a multiple award-winning bike lending program run by the Community Bicycle Network, must find a new source of funding or the popular program will shut down. BikeShare is Canada's longest-running and largest community bike lending initiative.

This week, the program received a Bicycle Friendly Business award in Best Overall from the City of Toronto. BikeShare has also been recognized locally, nationally and internationally by numerous organizations including Transport Canada, the Green Toronto Award, and the Stockholm Awards for Sustainable Development.

"We've won awards year after year from the city of Toronto, and have supporters across Canada and the world, but sadly this has not translated into a reliable source of funding," said Maogosha Pyjor, BikeShare's Project Manager.
